What is hormone replacement therapy?

Your body produces all of the hormones needed throughout your lifespan. These chemical messengers prompt a vast array of bodily functions. Some hormones, called sex hormones, control aspects of your reproductive health. 

As you age, your natural hormone production level declines. This can leave your hormones out of balance and bring about a wide range of uncomfortable symptoms. As women enter and move through menopause, hormonal disruption is the chief cause of these changes.

Menopause is the most common reason why women seek hormone replacement therapy. 

Just because menopause is a natural part of the aging process, that doesn’t mean you can’t achieve relief through bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

Hormonal imbalance can also occur after certain gynecologic treatments like hysterectomy. Any procedure that affects the uterus and ovaries can bring on hormonal changes, and supplemental hormones can restore optimal balance.

What is the process for getting hormone replacement therapy?

The process begins with blood testing to determine your current hormone production levels. You’ll also sit down with your practitioner to discuss any symptoms or changes you’ve noticed and to clarify your treatment goals. 

If you decide to move forward with hormone replacement therapy, getting started is a simple and straightforward process. Hormones are administered via small pellets that are inserted just beneath the skin in your upper buttocks. 

These pellets are about the size of a grain of rice. The process of placing them is quick, and there is no significant discomfort. Once in place, the pellets slowly release a steady stream of supplemental hormones to add to your natural hormone production. 

It takes time for your body to adjust to supplemental hormones, and it can take a process of trial and error to find the right level of supplemental hormones for your needs. You’ll have the support of the Panhandle Obstetrics and Gynecology team as you navigate the process.
